Email Hosting FAQ
I'd like to have one or more email accounts for my domain. What do you recommend?
The choice is ultimately yours, but here are a few options you might want to consider:
Google Workspace Email
GoDaddy Office 365 Zoho
Rackspace Email
Fastmail
Google Workspace and GoDaddy Office 365 have traditionally been the most popular options for most of our customers. At Main Street Sites we use Google Workspace for our own email accounts. The Zoho Lite plan at just $1/month per mailbox is another good option to consider if you prefer a lower cost option.
After I select a mail provider, is there anything I need to tell Main Street Sites?
Yes. After you select a mail provider, we'll need to update the MX records for your domain. Please send an email to
support@MainStreetSites.com if you add or change your email provider.
Didn't Main Street Sites used to offer email hosting?
It is true we used to offer email hosting for customers that hosted their website with Main Street Sites. However, we stopped offering this option several years ago.
Why did Main Street Sites stop offering email hosting as an option to new customers?
We stopped offering email hosting for several reasons:
- With the rise of smartphones, tablets and other mobile technologies, customers began to expect to be able to access their email from multiple devices. The email technology (i.e., IMAP) required for this sort access was not something our mail server was able to support. On the other hand, providers like RackSpace, Google Apps, Zoho and others are able to support these technologies.
- When we first offered email hosting, customers were used to mailbox sizes of 50 MB (megabytes) or less. Over time, customers began to expect much larger mailboxes. For example, Gmail offers 30 GB of mailbox space (i.e., 600 times more than we were providing). Our email server infrastructure was not designed to accommodate these larger capacities. In order for us to support these larger capacities, we would have had to invest in hardware and raise our prices for a service that wasn't core to our business.
- Email hosting wasn't a core service. Our focus is website hosting and Back Office services. We ultimately decided that it was in everyone's best interest for us to focus on what we do best.
