Referral Marketing Settings

This page describes the settings for Referral Marketing.  To learn more about the Referral Marketing module, please see the Referral Marketing Overview

Enable Referral Marketing

This is an on/off switch the referral marketing module.  When this switch is turned off no referral codes will not be accepted on customer orders.  This can be used if you are running a program with a time limit.  Set the switch to "enable" to use referral marketing features.

Credit behavior for the referring customer (the source of the referral)

Here you can describe the credit your referring customer should receive for a successful referral.  This benefit is optional -- you do not need to award a credit to your existing customer unless you wish to.  If you are awarding something material like a gift, you should turn off the option to create a credit here.

Credit or discount for the new customer (the customer being referred)

Here you can describe a discount for the order or a credit that can be used in the future.  This reward is also optional.

Determining Eligibility for New Customer Referrals

Here you can tell the system how to determine who is a truly new customer.  For example, you may want to indicate that customers who have had demos should not be eligible for referral credits.

Requiring Manual Approval for Referrals

This option lets you set up an approval process for new referrals.  You can review incoming referrals in Manage > Activity > Referrals.  When you use this option, the email and reward for the referring customer will not be created until you have approved the referral.

Note that if you are awarding a credit on the customer order to new customers, this will take place whether or not you have delayed approval of the referrals.  If instead the award is a credit for future use, it will not be created until the referral has been approved.

Referral Hyperlinks and Referral Code Tokens

This section includes the email tokens you can put in your Main Street Sites emails. You can use either of these tokens to share referral codes with your customers. For example:

Here is your personal referral code:%referral_code%   Please share it with your friends to receive a $10 credit on future registrations!

Here is your personal referral link:%referral_code_link%   Please share it with your friends to receive a $10 credit on future registrations!

The referral code is like a coupon code -- it is entered during checkout.  The referral link sets a cookie that will enter the code automatically.  You can use whichever approach you prefer (or both).  The unique code and link are also available to your customers on the My Account page in your customer portal.

The referral link will set a cookie on your prospective customer's browser.  You can set the lifespan of that cookie using the "Duration for the referral code cookie" setting.  This indicates how long after the link is clicked that a new customer order will count as a referral.

The "Referral code link destination page" indicates where the referral link should take your prospective customers.  This can any page in your Main Street Sites account. The cookie will be set regardless of the page you use. You may want to create a landing page that welcomes the customer and describes your referral policy, or you might want to send them directly to your class schedule or registration page.
